What Is MacKeeper?
MacKeeper is a utility software package for Apple computers. It is designed to keep your Mac running fast and clean. With 17 different tools built into this utility, you have everything you need to keep your Mac running just like the day you bought it.
The software was developed by ZeoBiT. They are a very reputable software development company that specializes in building useful and reliable utility software for Macs and PCs. MacKeeper is, of course, their Mac version and PCKeeper is the Windows version.
Why You Need MacKeeper
First of all, the more you use your Mac the more it is going to get bogged down with unneeded files and programs. All of that junk is going to make your Mac slow. If it hasn’t started happening to you yet, it will. It is inevitable due to the way we use our computers.
You don’t have to worry about that happening to you though. With the tools available in MacKeeper, you can keep everything running just like new.
Secondly, beyond speed and cleanliness this software package has some really great tools in it. For example, have you ever permanently deleted a file and instantly wished you hadn’t? We all have. It just happens sometimes. Well, permanent isn’t so permanent anymore with one of the tools in this software. Now you can actually retrieve files that you thought were gone forever. How amazing is that? So, what about files that you actually do want to be deleted permanently (top secret stuff) with no chance of getting them back? You guessed it. There’s a tool for that too! These are just a couple of examples of the tools that are available.
What Comes With MacKeeper?
When you purchase this software, you get a collection of useful tools. There are 17 tools in total. All of these pieces are divided into three categories: Cleaners, Tools, and Services. Here is a list of what you get:
Cleaners
- Binaries Cutter
- Cache Cleaner
- Duplicates Finder
- Languages Cutter
- Logs Cleaner
- Old Files Finder
Tools
- Backup
- Data Encryptor
- Default Apps
- Disk Usage
- Login Items
- Shredder
- Undelete
- Wise Unistaller
Services

- Geek on Demand
- ZeoDisk
For details and video demonstrations of what each of these Cleaners, Tools, and Services does, checkout the official ZeoBIT website.
Who Will Benefit The Most From MacKeeper?
This software will benefit anyone who owns an Apple computer. As mentioned earlier, all computers slow down and get cluttered with junk. If it hasn’t already happened to your computer then it is just a matter of time. This software will keep your computer clean and quick.
Also, anyone who feels like their computer might be easily lost or stolen will benefit greatly from this software. With the Anti-Theft services, you can easily detect the location of your computer once it has been stolen. That service alone makes this utility worth the investment.
Another group that will get a lot of benefit from this software are those who sometimes need technical support for their Mac. Whatever problem you run into, the Geek on Demand service allows you to get quick help from knowledgeable professionals. It’s like having your own personal computer expert to help you out whenever you run into trouble.
The Bottom Line?
To put it simply, this is a great software package to keep your Mac running fast and clean and to perform several other useful functions. As with any software, it’s not perfect and there are pros and cons to be considered. Here is a list of some of the pros and cons as I see it.
Pros:
- Very simple to understand and use
- Will extend the useable life of your Mac
- Frees up disk space and speeds up the computer
- Allows you to recover lost files
- Can help you recover a stolen computer
- And too many other pros to list
Cons:
- You must be using at least OS X 10.5
- ZeoDisk gives you 3 GB of online storage. It would be nice to have a little more than that.
In my opinion, the pros of this software far out weigh the cons. All of the tools and services in this software are great, but even just one of them would make it worthwhile. If you have a Mac, you need these tools. So give it a try. I know you will be just as impressed as I am.

I am a recent (January 2011) convert to Mac. I became skeptical of it’s resistance to malware last month when I noted it slowing much like my Thinkpad would when it bogged down with adware. I decided to try MacKeeper. It found one Trojan and 3 viruses, all identified and confirmed.
It should be no surprise that Apple has attracted malware. The media has been boosting Apple and downgrading Dell, HP and every minor player in the PC space.
Beyond the malware protection, the theft reporting feature is neat.
I bought a 5-Mac pack to protect my MacBook Pro and my kids 4 machines. Dumb not to!
